Starting a company, nurturing it, and growing it into the business you always dreamed of can take a lot of blood, sweat and tears. So when the time comes for you to sell it there may be some practical matters to consider. Knowing the potential value of your business is one thing (what someone will pay for it, dependant on a number of factors, is something completely different), however, knowing what you need to sell for is considerably more powerful. We can’t influence markets or find the perfect buyer, but we can help you organise yourself (and your businesses financial matters) and show you what you need, financially, in order to be able to achieve the lifestyle or next adventure you desire.
As business owners, my wife and I are always incredibly busy. We struggle to find the time to effectively understand and manage our personal affairs. After receiving an offer for the business, we realised we needed to take control of our financial situation. We wanted to explore the various options available to us, determine a plan for the future and the best way to eventually exit.
As a result of our hectic lifestyle, we were financially disorganized. We had a number of policies although no cohesive strategy. We didn’t have wills and we knew we would have an issue with inheritance tax (IHT).
The majority of our money was sitting in a deposit account, attracting no interest. We were not making the most of our money and had no clear view of our wider financial position.
We needed a trusted adviser to help us to understand our current position, bring order to our affairs and make the most of our assets as part of long-term plan for future.
We contacted Carrington and arranged to meet with Mike. At the initial meeting, he talked us through their structured financial planning process. We discussed our current situation and what we were trying to achieve.
Using Lifetime Cash Flow analysis we explored different scenarios based on our financial priorities. Mike then put together our financial Life Plan. For The first time, we could visualise the future and impact of our decisions.
Mike also introduced us to a solicitor, who updated our wills and sorted out the legal aspect of our affairs. The solicitor helped us to initiate various trusts, to avoid IHT and establish an educational fund for our grandchildren.
Everything was managed quickly and efficiently. Our financial affairs have been simplified and all of our assets are now in the one place. We managed to sell the business and Mike has helped to eliminate any financial concerns. We are happy in the knowledge that we can afford to do all the things we want to do in life.
My wife and I continue to work with Carrington on an ongoing basis. They review our plan regularly and we always look forward to our meetings where we discuss any changes in our circumstances and make adjustments to ensure we remain on track.
We highly recommend Mike and the team at Carrington. With very busy lifestyles, my wife and I were daunted by the prospect of taking control of our finances, but Carrington’s structured approach has proved an incredible benefit in helping us to efficiently manage our finances and plan for the future.
